What are tags and how do they affect what I can do?

Tags in FileGrant aren't just labels — they're policy tools that can restrict actions on a file, overriding any manual permission you've been given.

Tags in FileGrant are more than descriptive labels. They are policy instruments: they can activate specific restrictions on a file, regardless of the access permission you have.

How tags work

A tag by itself does nothing. The effect depends on the rules your admin has linked to that tag in Settings. The same tag can have different effects in different configurations.

Tag

Effect

'no download' tag

Prevents anyone from downloading the file — even users with Editor access.

'anti-capture' tag

Forces the file to open only via the FileGrant desktop app. It cannot be opened in a browser.

Visibility-limiting tag

Hides the file from certain users or roles, even if it was technically shared with them.

Tags always win

Tags take priority over any manual permission. If you have Editor access but the file has a 'no download' tag, you cannot download it. There are no exceptions.

Inheritance on folders

If a tag is applied to a folder, all files inside automatically inherit it. To exclude a specific file, the administrator must manually remove the tag from that file.
