Why can't I edit a file?

Online editing via Office 365 requires specific conditions — here's a checklist of common reasons editing might be blocked.

Examples that prevent file editing

Cause

What to do

You have Read-Only access

Read-Only permission does not allow editing. Only the sender can change your permission to Editor.

You have the Reader role

The Reader role is view-only. You cannot edit files under any circumstances.

The file format doesn't support online editing

Online editing is available for DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, CSV  and CS files.
Other formats such as PDFs, images, and similar files cannot be edited online.

A tag is blocking editing

In some cases tags can restrict editing too. Check with your administrator.

💡 Tip: If you need to edit a PDF, ask the sender to share the original editable version (e.g., a DOCX) instead.
